Most of us grew up hearing “every six months”, and for plenty of people that's still the right answer. But a cleaning schedule works best when it's built around your mouth, not the calendar. Some patients do well with a visit each year; others need to come in every three months to keep their gums healthy.
Here's how we decide, and what to ask at your next check-up.
Where the six-month rule comes from
Plaque that you miss while brushing hardens into tartar within a few days. Once it's there, only a professional cleaning can remove it. For a healthy adult with good habits, six months is roughly how long it takes for that build-up to start irritating the gums.
That makes twice a year a sensible default, and it's what most insurance plans cover in full. If you're not sure what your plan includes, our billing team can check for you.
The best schedule is the one that keeps your gums quiet between visits. If they bleed or feel tender, that's our cue to see you sooner.
When you might need to come in more often
Gum disease tends to come back once you've had it, and some health conditions speed up plaque build-up. We usually suggest a cleaning every three or four months if any of these apply:
- You've been treated for gum disease in the past
- You have diabetes, or you're pregnant
- You smoke or use nicotine products
- You wear braces, aligners or a bridge that traps food
Children often need less. Unless there are cavities or crowding, a clean and check every six months keeps them on track.
What happens at a cleaning
A routine visit takes about 45 minutes. Your hygienist will talk you through each step before it starts.
- 01We measure your gums and look for any changes since last time.
- 02Tartar is removed from above and just below the gum line.
- 03Your teeth are polished to lift surface stains and smooth the enamel.
- 04Your dentist checks for cavities and agrees a schedule with you.
If it's been a while, don't worry. There's no lecture, just a plan. You can book a cleaning online at any of our clinics.
